Office of Coal, Nuclear, and Renewables Division

Director: Thomas A. Schmitz

The Coal, Nuclear and Renewable Fuels Division provides the independent and unbiased base data for the analysis and forecasting modeling functions within CNEAF and the EIA.  The Division conducts coal, nuclear, renewable and alternative fueled surveys and provides analytical products for these fuel industries.  The Divison also produces independent and balanced short-term forecasts.

Within the Coal, Nuclear and Renewable Fuels Division the Renewables Information Team conducts independent and impartial data collections and processing activities through comprehensive, state-of-the-art surveys that are required to meet the needs of DOE legislative mandates and those of the user community.   The Renewables Information Team prepares impartial, scheduled, periodic, statistical, and interpretive reports and technical publications on for use in developing policy guidance on current and potential energy legislation. These include, but are not limited to the "Renewable Energy Annual," and "Renewable Energy Trends," "Geothermal Heat Pump Shipments," "Solar Thermal Collector Manufacturers," and "Photovoltaic Module/Cell Manufacturers."

It also provides impartial energy information to the National Energy Modeling System, the Annual Energy Review, other Government agencies, Congress, States, international energy agencies, the public, and industry organizations, for use in developing policy guidance on current and potential energy legislation.

The Renewables Information Team develops and maintains an active industry outreach, communications and marketing program to interface with individual companies, associations, and professional organizations to promote the use of EIA published energy industry data.

Senior Technical Advisor     Fred Mayes

The Renewables Information Team is responsible for the following renewable energy fuels: biomass, municipal solid waste, wood /wood waste, landfill gas, geothermal energy, geothermal heat pumps, hydroelectric, solar thermal, solar photovoltaic, and wind.  The Renewable Information team provides information on  U.S. renewable energy consumption, capacity, and electric generation.

Current Products:

Solar Thermal and Photovoltaic Collector Manufacturing Activities - This report indicates that both solar thermal collectors and solar photovoltaic power devices continued their double-digit growth in 2006. Total shipments of solar thermal collectors increased 29 percent to 20.7 million square feet, while total shipments of photovoltaic cells and modules increased nearly 50 percent to 337,268 peak kilowatts between 2005 and 2006.

The Renewable Energy Consumption and Electricity Preliminary 2007 Statistics Preliminary report showing renewable energy provided 7 percent of total U.S. energy consumption in 2007. Total renewable energy market consumption was comprised of biomass, hydroelectricity, geothermal, wind and solar.

The Renewable Energy Annual 2006 is the twelfth in a series of annual publications on various aspects of the renewable energy marketplace by the Energy Information Administration (EIA). The 2006 edition presents four reports, accompanied with data tables and graphics covering: energy consumption and electricity generation, as well as solar thermal, photovoltaic, and geothermal heat pump manufacturing activities. The renewable energy resources in the report include: biomass, wood, wood waste, municipal solid waste, landfill gas, ethanol, and other waste, as well as, wind, solar, solar thermal and photovoltaic and hydropower.
Renewable Energy Annual 2006 2005 2004 2003 2002 2001 2000 1999 1998 1997 1996 1995

Renewable Energy Trends in Consumption and Electricity - This report provides detailed information on final data on renewable energy for 2006 and detailed sectioins on wind energy developments, concentrating solar power, biodiesel and wave and tidal wave.

Survey of Geothermal Heat Pump Shipments - This report provides detailed information on geothermal heat pump shipments for 2006.  The number of units shipped in 2006 increased over 30 percent compared to 2005.

Green Pricing and Net Metering Programs - This report provides detailed information on the number of electric industry participants and their customers in these programs for 2006. The number of green pricing customers in 2006 was almost 650,000 nationwide, while the number of net metering customers was less at nearly 35,000.

Methodology for Allocating Municipal Solid Waste to Biogenic and Non-Biogenic Energy This report summarizes the methodology used to split the heat content of municipal solid waste (MSW) into its biogenic and non-biogenic shares.

Policies to Promote Non-hydro Renewable Energy in the United States and Selected Counties, 2005
This article examines policies designed to encourage the development of non-hydro renewable energy in four countries - Germany, Denmark, The Netherlands, and Japan - and compares the policies enacted in each of these countries to policies that were used in the United States between 1970 and 2003. Each section includes information about countries' electricity generation from non-hydro renewables and relates the growth in non-hydro renewable generation to countries' policies.
