On March 5, 2007, the Subcommittee on National Security and Foreign Affairs held a hearing today on the conditions at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. The Subcommittee heard testimony from affected soldiers, family members, and military officials.
On March 22, 2007, the Subcommittee Chairman Tierney held a hearing exploring IED and conventional munitions storage sites in Iraq and whether the Department of Defense has taken appropriate steps to identify and secure these sites. A GAO report released at the hearing documents how poor planning and overly-optimistic assumptions led to countless unsecured munitions sites throughout Iraq.
On April 17, 2007, the Subcommittee on National Security and Foreign Affairs held a hearing to examine the Pentagon’s subsequent response to the Subcommittee’s March 5 field hearing on allegations of unacceptable care and living conditions of wounded soldiers housed at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center. This hearing explored what is being done about broader systemic problems identified throughout the Defense Department medical care system.

On June 27, 2007, the Subcommittee held a briefing entitled “International Perspectives on Strengthening the Nonproliferation Regime.”
On July 12, 2007, the National Security Subcommittee held a hearing entitled, “Pakistan at the Crossroads; Afghanistan in the Balance.”
On July 26, 2007, the National Security Subcommittee held a joint hearing with the full Oversight Committee entitled, “Allegations of Waste, Fraud, and Abuse at the New U.S. Embassy in Iraq.”
The Subcommittee on National Security and Foreign Affairs hearing entitled, “Bringing Accountability to U.S. Arms Transfers: The Train and Equip Program for Iraqi Security Forces” has been postponed.
On September 26, 2007, the Subcommittee on National Security and Foreign Affairs held a hearing entitled, “Third Walter Reed Oversight Hearing: Keeping the Nation’s Promise to Our Wounded Soldiers.”
On October 10, 2007, the Subcommittee on National Security and Foreign Affairs held a hearing entitled, “Six Years Later: Assessing Long-Term Threats, Risks and the U.S. Strategy for Security in a Post-9/11 World.”
The National Security Subcommittee held a hearing on October 30, 2007, entitled, “Iran: Reality, Options, and Consequences. Part 1 – Iranian People and Attitudes.”
On November 6, 2007, the Subcommittee on National Security and Foreign Affairs held a hearing entitled, “Six Years Later (Part II): ‘Smart Power’ and the U.S. Strategy for Security in a Post-9/11 World.”
