Mint and Other Coin Production Facilities
Throughout Treasury's history, we have produced United States coins at facilities across the country. They are listed below, along with brief information. More detailed information is also available on selected facilities.
-- This facility was authorized by the of April 2, 1792. It produced the first regular coinage in 1793. This Mint is still in operation, and is . The Philadelphia Mint:
-- This facility was authorized by the of April 21, 1862. It served as an Assay Office until 1906, when coinage operations began. This Mint is still in operation, and is . The Denver Mint:
-- The San Francisco facility was authorized by the of July 3, 1852. It first produced coinage in 1854. Coinage operations were suspended in March 1955, but the plant continued to operate as an Assay Office. , passed on July 11, 1962, changed the official designation from "Mint to Assay Office." Coinage operations were again authorized under the authority of the , approved on July 23, 1965. The San Francisco Mint:
- Manufactures and packages Regular and Silver Proof Coin Sets;
- Manufactures, packages and ships ; and
-- This facility was closed.
-- This facility was authorized by the Act of March 3, 1835. Coinage operations were conducted there from 1838 through May 20, 1861. They were discontinued due to the Civil War and never resumed. The plant was reopened in 1868 as an Assay Office and these operations ceased on June 30, 1913, when the plant was closed.
-- This facility was authorized by the Act of March 3, 1835. Coinage operations were conducted there from 1838, were suspended in 1861 and never resumed. The building passed out of Government possession in 1871.
-- This facility was authorized by the Act of March 3, 1835. Coinage operations were conducted there from 1838, but were suspended from 1861 until 1879, but assay functions were performed from 1876. Coinage resumed in 1879 and continued until 1909. The facility operated as an Assay Office from 1909 until 1942, when it was closed.
The Fort Knox, Kentucky Bullion Depository -- The site for this installation was formerly a part of the Fort Knox military reservation that was deeded to the Treasury Department. The Depository was completed in 1936. The Fort Knox Bullion Depository:
- Protects Gold Bullion and Assets of other Agencies.
-- This structure, completed and occupied in 1938, is situated on a 4-acre tract of land formerly part of the West Point military reservation, which was deeded to the Treasury Department. It is operated as an adjunct of the New York Assay Office. The West Point Bullion Depository:
- Manufactures and packages Uncirculated Silver coins;
- Manufactures and packages Proof and Uncirculated Gold coins;
- Manufactures, packages and ships ;
- Stores Gold and Silver Bullion.
-- This facility was authorized by the of February 1, 1881. It opened on July 1, 1881 and closed on June 30, 1911.
-- This facility was authorized by the of May 12, 1874. It began operations on January 15, 1877 and closed on June 30, 1933.
-- This facility was authorized by the of May 30, 1908. It opened on February 1, 1909 and closed on June 30, 1933.
-- This facility was established by the of June 11, 1896 and the Act of February 19, 1897. It opened on April 20, 1898, and closed on June 30, 1927.
-- This facility was established by the of February 19, 1869. It received its first deposits in March 1872. It closed on June 30, 1933.
-- This facility was established by the of March 3, 1853. It opened in 1854. It closed on December 31, 1982.
