I want to be a Secret Service Agent. How can I get a job with the Secret Service?

Question I want to work for the Treasury Department. How do I apply for a job?

Answer Each Treasury Bureau is delegated personnel authority and is responsible for its own hiring needs. There is no central listing of job opportunities maintained by the Department. You can review a description of each bureau's functions and a list of the personnel offices. You much contact each one individually to obtain specific information on Bureau staffing needs and vacancy announcements. In addition, some vacancy announcements are posted on the Treasury Department's Jobs Page .

Question I want to be a Secret Service Agent. How can I get a job with the Secret Service?

Answer Applicants for any professional positions involving personnel, training, protective research, and other headquarters divisions have work-related experience and education. Applicants for the Special Agent and Uniformed Division positions generally have educational backgrounds in criminology, police science, sociology, psychology, and related fields. In addition, it is necessary for all applicants for the Special Agent position to pass the Treasury Enforcement Agent Examination. We have copies of the Special Agent and United States Secret Service Uniformed Division pamphlets available for distribution. Both of them provide more information on these positions. Those individuals who feel they meet the qualification requirements should follow the application procedures described therein.

It is important to realize, however, that the Secret Service routinely receives a large volume of applications. There are limited vacancies available at any given time, however, and they can hire only a few of the applicants.

Please note that as of March 2003, the United States Secret Service (USSS) moved to the Department of Homeland Security and is no longer a bureau of the Department of the Treasury.
