Nebraska NRCS Receives National Federally Employed Women (FEW) Award

Effective September 2, 2007, Kevin D. Norton was selected as Louisiana NRCS State Conservationist.  For the past nine years, Mr. Norton served as Assistant State Conservationist for Programs in Oklahoma providing leadership for implementation of Farm Bill related financial and technical assistance programs.

Russell Morgan
Russell Morgan

Russell Morgan was selected as Delaware NRCS State Conservationist effective September 2, 2007.  Mr. Morgan previously served as National Program Leader for the Watershed Rehabilitation Program in NHQ, Washington, D.C. where he was responsible for managing an annual budget of more than $31 million and developing and evaluating national program priorities, guidelines, standards, manuals, and procedures for implementing rehabilitation initiatives.  He also provided leadership and guidance on the issue of aging watershed infrastructures.

Revised Working Trees for WildlifeRevised Working Trees for Wildlife Available
The National Agroforestry Center (NAC) recently announced the availability of the revised edition of the Working Trees for Wildlife (WTW) brochure.  WTW is designed to be an awareness-level publication introducing the concept of strategically implementing agroforestry practices benefiting wildlife.  The revised WTW provides more comprehensive discussion about benefits and how agroforestry practices can enhance wildlife habitat in the U.S.

Hispanic Heritage Month begins on September 15 (through October 15) the anniversary of independence for five Latin American countries — Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico declared its independence on September 16 and Chile on September 18.  Hispanic Heritage Month has been celebrated in the United States since 1974, when President Gerald Ford issued a Presidential Proclamation extending Hispanic Heritage Week into a month-long observance.  The theme for this year's Hispanic Heritage Month is Hispanic Americans: Making a Positive Impact on American Society.

Part 654 (Chapter 14) Stream Restoration Design of the National Engineering Handbook Stream Restoration Design Handbook Released
Over 200 practitioners from government, private, and academic fields participated in the development of Part 654 (Chapter 14) Stream Restoration Design of the National Engineering Handbook (NEH) recently released via the NRCS Directives system.   The new NEH Part 654 focuses on design tools for stream restoration projects.

NRCS district conservationist Murray Fulton was on hand to answer questions from NRCS Earth Team Volunteers, local Girl Scouts, and the Brandon, Mississippi, High School vo-ag class participating in a World Monitoring Month event.  The central Mississippi youngsters assisted residents measuring water quality in urban and agricultural areas.
