Organizations that have received grant funding from OVC are making the most of their awards in a wide variety of inspiring and often innovative ways. The project listed below is an example of the first-rate outreach activities being performed by OVC grantees. ¡Basta Ya! Public Awareness Campaign Too often, immigrant victims of crime are unaware of the resources available to them. In 2005, Austin, Texas, authorities launched a campaign, ¡Basta Ya! No lo Permites, in the Spanish-speaking community to inform victims of their rights and to spread the word that victim assistance is available through social service organizations, churches, and police departments. The campaign, funded by the Office for Victims of Crime, encourages victims and witnesses to speak to law enforcement authorities without fear that their immigration status will be challenged. ¡Basta Ya!-Spanish for "enough"-will be displayed on several Capital Metro buses and on posters throughout neighborhoods. Spanish radio stations are also airing public service announcements as part of the campaign, and Spanish newspapers have highlighted this initiative. Houses of religion are often the first places that victims turn for help. In recognition of that fact, officials with Catholic Charities of Central Texas in support of this campaign offers workshops to clergy and lay leaders throughout Austin to inform them about services geared to Spanish-speaking victims and to seek their aid in convincing victims of the importance of reporting crimes.
