Office of Science Laboratory Business Plans
The Office of Science has a challenge and responsibility to manage its national laboratories to ensure focus on the Department’s missions, ensure strategic and cutting-edge research while managing operating costs and avoiding duplication of effort. The Director of the Office of Science, beginning in 2004, has held institutional reviews of each of the ten Science laboratories to determine distinguishing capabilities and major challenges, scientific and operations. The Director’s expectation is that each laboratory be world-class in its primary business lines and work synergistically with other laboratories in its secondary business lines. In addition, the Business Plans include a five-year plan identifying the research facilities and resource requirements necessary to fulfill these primary and secondary missions as well as a longer-range vision statement, beyond the five-year budget horizon.
The Office of Laboratory Policy and Evaluation develops, manages, and coordinates implementation of Science laboratory strategic and business planning process, including preparation of instructions and annual laboratory policy and institutional guidance, as needed.
