General data storage policies

  • Source trees actively in use are best kept in home directories on /home
  • Files actively being read or written by running jobs should be kept in nobackup area.
  • Filess that need to be kept permanantly to be accessed at some future date should be tarred together in the units by which they will be recalled and archived in DMF filesystem.

  • Access DMF files using "dmget <list_of_files>"
  • Projects may have their own filesystems according to need.
  • Data that have been migrated to tape can be freed by the system at any time if cache space drops below 10% free space available on each filesystem.
  • These filesystems have their inodes backed up. Data on these filesystems are already assumed to be stored on tape. An inode for a file may be restored, but if the file has already been removed from tape, the file is gone.
  • DMF filesystems are for long-term storage needs. Use nobackup for scratch space.
  • DMF directories can be access by either /archive/g#/ < user > or the new environment variable, $ARCHIVE.

User-managed filesystems and policies

Filesystem Origin Mount Altix Mount Skulked DMF Backup Hardware Size Access
/staging CXFS CXFS No No No TP9300 SATA 933G dao_ops (temporary)
/share CXFS CXFS No No No TP9300 SATA 1.8T GMAO Users
  • Each user group is responsible for its own area. If the filesystem is running low on space, it is the user group's responsibility to clean up space.
  • These filesystems are not backed up by the administration team. Users are expected to back up their own files.

Scratch filesystems and policies

Filesystem Origin Mount Altix Mount Skulked DMF Backup Hardware Size Access

  • Any user of the system may use the local (/lscr1) scratch file system.
  • Scratch filesystems are not backed up.
  • /tmp on each system is not to be used by general users. Use the scratch areas as provided.
  • Users are given a "userid" directory on one of the nobackup file systems. A user should access this directory via the /explore/nobackup/userid path or by $NOBACKUP. A soft quota of 200 GBs and a hard quota of 400 GBs is applied to all /explore/nobackup/userid directories. If a quota needs to be raised, the user should send a request to USG stated the size of the requested quota and the reason for the increase.
  • Projects are given a "Project" directory on one of the nobackup file systems. Project is access via the /explore/nobackup/project path.

Home filesystems and policies

Filesystem Origin Mount Altix Mount Skulked DMF Backup Hardware Size Access
/home0 CXFS CXFS No No Yes TP9300 Fiberchannel 545G Origin and Altix Users
/home1 CXFS CXFS No No Yes TP9300 Fiberchannel 545G Origin and Altix Users
  • Home filesystems are backed daily with incremental dumps, and a full dump is completed once a week.
  • Backups of home filesystems are kept for at most one month.
  • Home filesystems are managed with quotas. The default quota for users is 512MB. Users can request a larger quota if need is justified (/home0 and /home1 are not meant for temporary storage or scratch space; use the available scratch areas if temporary storage is needed).

*/lscr1 is a replacement for /tmp. They are skulked or cleaned on regular basis for any data over 24 hours old.*
