NCCS Discover Cluster

Overview

  1. The NCCS will install a Linux Networx (LNXI) cluster in the summer of 2006 to begin the replacement of the aging HP Alpha Cluster (see the following press release, Click here).

The cluster environment will provide a much needed technology refresh to the NCCS HPC environment and provide an excellent platform in which to grow capacity computing.

  2. The driving factor behind the resulting cluster environment was to provide additional capability to the user community while minimizing the effort involved in using the new system. Hence, the new environment has been architected to closely match the current NCCS and NAS compute environments in order to minimize the learning curve associated with new systems. The Linux cluster will have the following characteristics:

    • SUSE Linux O/S
    • Intel Processors and Compilers
    • PBS
    • Modules

  3. The resulting user environment will allow users to be able to move more freely between the cluster and Altix systems as the need arises.

  4. In addition, a driving requirement behind the cluster was to use commodity but stable components. The resulting solution is a partnership between multiple vendors dedicated to the success of the NCCS.
