Training & Education
The Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE) health communication experts work alongside instructional designers, graphic artists, and multimedia developers to create customized training and educational materials that address worker health and safety topics as well as consumer health and environmental health and toxicology.
We also call on our network of internationally recognized communication experts to conduct various courses and workshops for a variety of audiences.
ORISE's approach is to work closely with its clients to:
- define the instructional objectives
- identify materials needed
- choose the best approach for reaching the intended audience
- evaluate the final product to identify strengths and opportunities for improvement.
While often an effective method, ORISE does not restrict itself to traditional classroom training. We explore cost-effective and efficient alternatives for delivery, such as:
- via the Web (Web-casting)
- on demand (video streaming of previous presentations)
- collaborative experiences
- interactive simulations
- self-paced tutorials
- guided instructions
- quick, to-the-point job aids that deliver just-in-time training
Full-function exercises and drills may also be appropriate. The decision is made based on the audience and the learning objectives.
Project Examples
Environmental Health and Medical Information Outreach – National Library of Medicine
ORISE has developed and delivered training to educate health professionals— particularly those in minority and economically disadvantaged communities—on how to access and use NLM's extensive environmental health, toxicology, and medical databases.
Cardiovascular Public Health Training and Technical Support
For the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Division for Heart Disease and Stroke Prevention, ORISE conducts training, develops computer-based training products, and prepares resource materials that help state agency staff implement heart disease and stroke prevention programs.
Self-Directed Study—Nuclear Regulatory Commission
ORISE supports the NRC’s training and development program with the design, development, and delivery of directed self-study courses. The courses allow individuals to study at their own pace and to self-check their progress while remaining current on regulations.
Kentucky Statewide Emergency Communication Training
ORISE collaborated with Kentucky public health officials to develop the Kentucky Strategic National Stockpile Emergency Communication Guide. ORISE also trained officials statewide on risk communications and how to use the new guide.
