COPD Awareness Month – Get the Word Out!

November is National COPD Awareness Month. The US COPD Coalition has adopted COPD Learn More Breathe Better as the theme for November 2007.

Two new valuable tools from NHLBI can help you spread the word about COPD this November and beyond– the COPD Learn More Breathe Better Resource Kit and the COPD Event Listing.

The COPD Learn More Breathe Better Resource Kit

The COPD Learn More Breathe Better Resource Kit is designed with your programming needs in mind.  The kit materials can be adapted for presentations to the public, to health care providers, for informal support groups, office-based/waiting room outreach, regional awareness, screening, or media events or even more formal presentation settings, such as grand rounds.

Learn More Breathe Better – In the News

CBS Evening News with Katie Couric
On September 12, the COPD Learn More Breathe Better campaign was featured on CBS Evening News with Katie Couric, raising awareness and understanding of COPD with nearly 6 million viewers.

Campaign spokesperson Grace Anne Dorney Koppel and her husband Ted Koppel spoke with correspondent Dr. Sanjay Gupta about their experiences with COPD.  James Kiley, Ph.D, Director of the Division of Lung Diseases at NHLBI addressed prevalence statistics and the epidemic nature of the disease.

Graphic Image of Colorado COPD Coalition LogoPartners in Motion…Colorado COPD Coalition Launches First-Ever Statewide COPD Action Plan

More than 10 organizations including the ALA of Colorado, National Jewish Medical and Research Center and University of Colorado Health Sciences Center joined the Colorado COPD Coalition to introduce the first statewide action plan in the U.S. designed to address the growing public health epidemic of COPD.

The state campaign, “A Strategic Plan to Address COPD in Colorado,” outlines four target areas for improvement in COPD: public awareness, data collection, diagnosis and treatment, and advocacy efforts.  The plan sets goals, objectives, and strategies for reducing COPD mortality by 10 percent over the next three years.  (Read More)

Kitty Collins, RRT, has worked with COPD patients for 33 years.  An Outpatient Pulmonary Rehabilitation Coordinator at Seton Medical Center in Austin, Texas, Collins also serves as a volunteer with the American Lung Association and is a member of the Board of Directors of the Texas Association of Cardiac and Pulmonary Rehabilitation (TACVPR).  Over the years, she has had great success planning and executing awareness events, and is currently planning activities for COPD Awareness Month 2007.
