Technology Assistance

NIJ brings technology closer to the frontlines through the National Law Enforcement and Corrections Technology Center (NLECTC), a system of regional centers that plays an integral part in NIJ’s science and technology programs. NLECTC offers the following:

  • Scientific and technical support to NIJ’s research and development efforts.
  • Demonstration and transfer of technology that can be adopted by the field.
  • Assistance in the development and dissemination of technology guidelines and standards
  • Technology assistance, information, and support to law enforcement and corrections agencies, courts, and crime laboratories.

The newest additions in the NLECTC system are the Technology Centers of Excellence:

  • The Communications Technologies Center of Excellence, hosted by  Drakontas, LLC of Camden, New Jersey
  • The Sensors, Surveillance, and Biometric Technologies Center of Excellence, hosted by the International Biometric Group, LLC, New York, New York
  • The Weapons and Protective Systems Technologies Center of Excellence, hosted by the Pennsylvania State University, Applied Research Laboratory State College, Pennsylvania
  • National Forensic Science Technology Center of Excellence, hosted by the National Forensic Science Technology Center, Largo, Florida

The Technology Centers of Excellence will serve as the authoritative resource within the NLECTC system for their areas of focus for both practitioners who use the technology and those who develop it. The Centers of Excellence will be integrated closely with the existing NLECTC system centers, which are the point of entry into the system for criminal justice agencies around the country.
