"Final Answer" Pays Off Big Time for Former DHS Fellow
Ogi Ogas, a 2003 U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) fellow, applied his research in cognitive neuroscience to win $500,000 on the ABC television show, "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire." ORISE administers the fellowship program on behalf of DHS.

College Football Player Trades Helmet for Hard Hat to Gain Valuable Experience with Nuclear Instrumentation
David Yancey, a senior at the University of Tennessee and a running back on the school’s football team balances the demands of being a Division I college football player and studying nuclear engineering. Instead of having a little down time during this past summer, Yancey gained professional experience through a full-time internship with the ORISE' Independent Environmental Assessment and Verification program.

ORNL, ORISE Partner for Fifth Annual Day of Science and DOE Workshop to Promote Scientific Research Partnerships
More than 250 students and faculty from 45 colleges and universities across the nation, including many historically black colleges and universities and minority education institutions, gathered Oct. 16 at Oak Ridge National Laboratory for the Fifth Annual Day of Science and Department of Energy-sponsored Minority Education Technical Assistance Workshop.

Day of Science for Undergraduate Students and Faculty
This year's Day of Science at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) will take place Monday, Oct. 16, 2006. The Day of Science provides an exciting program for faculty and undergraduate students regarding opportunities for internship and research experiences at ORNL. New this year will be the concurrent program for the Minority Education Technical Assistance Workshop, designed for faculty, administrators, and sponsored research representatives to get first hand information for successfully competing for funding and collaborative opportunities with the Department of Energy (DOE) and DOE contractors.

It Takes a Very Special Person ...
... to advise, guide, teach and be a role model to a budding scientist, engineer or teacher of math and science. In a recent ceremony, ORISE honored several Oak Ridge National Laboratory employees who have served as mentors of the students and faculty placed by ORISE at the lab for research experiences.

Young Scientists Showcase Summer Research
ORISE coordinated an annual poster session where more than 100 students presented the results of their summer research projects. The students represented 13 scientific and technical research participation programs at Oak Ridge National Laboratory.

No Ordinary Summer Vacation
For 54 high school students and teachers, this was not a typical vacation. They were building robots, measuring aquatic organism populations, and using infrared imaging as participants in the 17th Appalachian Regional Commission / Oak Ridge National Laboratory Math-Science-Technology Summer Institute.

101 Students Awarded NOAA Scholarships
Ernest F. Hollings Undergraduate Scholarships were recently awarded to 101 full-time junior and senior students for the 2006-2007 academic year. Worth up to $8,000 each, the scholarships are awarded annually to accredited college or university students interested in oceanic and atmospheric science, research, technology and education.

Wesely Award Winner Doing the Dirty Work of Science
Erika Marín-Spiotta, a participant in an ORISE-administered research participation program, has often found herself neck deep in dirt and mud. She studies what happens to the environment when abandoned farm lands in tropical climates return to their natural state.

Media Analysis Tool Keeps Client Informed
Using a unique tool developed in-house, ORISE's health communications expert analyze more than 25,000 news articles a year on average for the CDC. Current analyses focus on disease and vaccination issues for influenza, including pandemic flu and avian flu.

Young Scientists Travel to Germany to Meet Nobel Laureates
Sixty outstanding graduate research students are attending the 56th Lindau Meeting of Nobel Laureates and Students in Lindau, Germany, June 25–30 to participate in chemistry activities with Nobel Laureates.

Historical ORISE Facility Transferred Back to DOE/Methodist Medical Center
A facility where ground-breaking nuclear medicine research had occurred since the 1950s was transferred back to the Department of Energy, who passed it on to Methodist Medical Center.

WeB-MEDIS Triage System Passes Recent Test
During a recent emergency preparedness exercise, participants tested ORISE's new WeB-MEDIS system. It allows first responders to enter and transmit patient triage information via a wireless network and handheld devices.
