Partnerships
Much of the success of SFP depends specifically upon the collaboration and partnering within NOAA. Three of the five major NOAA line organizations1 work together and are represented locally through the Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory and the Southeast Fisheries Science Center in Miami (NOAA/OAR and NOAA/NMFS, respectively) and the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary in Marathon (NOAA/NOS).The Coastal Ocean Program (NOAA/NOS) in Silver Spring, MD, also provides substantial financial support to SFP. Our pool of expertise is not limited to NOAA investigators only but reaches both into other federal and state agencies and numerous participating academic and research institutions such as Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science/University of Miami, Southeast Environmental Research Center/Florida International University, Old Dominion University, University of Florida, University of Maryland, University of South Florida, Florida Atlantic University and Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institution. To prevent duplication of efforts and maximize resources and agency expertise, NOAA SFP also works closely with many federal and state partners to coordinate research, monitoring and modeling activities within the South Florida marine ecosystem. Known as the Program Management Committee (PMC) of the Florida Bay and Adjacent Marine Systems Science Program, this group consists of scientific representatives of the state and federal agencies having environmental regulatory responsibilities and/or scientific interest in the South Florida coastal marine ecosystem. The PMC is charged with providing policy makers reliable scientific information and science-based recommendations including timely evaluation of the effects different upstream management alternatives have upon the ecosystem within and adjacent to Florida Bay. Our partners within this effort include: 1NOAA consists of five major line organizations, the 1) National Weather Service (NWS), 2) National Ocean Service (NOS), 3) National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS), 4) National Environmental Satellite, Data, Information Service (NESDIS), and 5) the Office of Oceanic and Atmospheric Research (OAR).
