This 4 1/2-day course is designed primarily for physicians, nurses, clinical nurse practitioners, and physicians' assistants who desire an advanced level of information on the diagnosis and treatment of a wide range of ionizing radiation injuries and illnesses.

Early interventions in the emergency department and basic physics are only briefly reviewed; therefore, the Radiation Emergency Medicine course is recommended as a prerequisite to this advanced course. It is also recommended that participants have a basic understanding of radiation sciences before attending.

Advanced topics in radiobiology and cytogenetic biodosimetry are provided. Medical management of radiation injuries and illnesses is covered in depth including the use of cytokines, stem cell transfusions, and other advanced techniques.

Demonstrations, laboratory exercises, and group problem-solving sessions complement the didactic presentations.
