Radiation Emergency Assistance Center and Training Site

Continuing Education Courses

The Radiation Emergency Assistance Center/Training Site (REAC/TS) at the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE) teaches accredited continuing education courses in radiation emergency medicine. Physicians, physicians' assistants, nurses, emergency medical technicians, health physicists, and first responders benefit from the lectures, discussions, and hands-on exercises as they learn their roles in the medical management of a radiation incident.

Courses are scheduled throughout the year at the unique ORISE facility in Oak Ridge, Tenn. Additionally, REAC/TS prepares and teaches customized courses at hospitals, nuclear facilities, and other locations across the country. If you are interested in such a course, please contact Gail Mack-Bramlette, course registrar, at 865-576-3132.

Courses

The following courses are scheduled to be taught at the REAC/TS facility. Follow the links for complete descriptions, schedules, costs, and registration information.

Radiation Emergency Medicine
This 3 1/2-day course is intended for physicians, nurses, and physicians' assistants who may be called upon to provide emergency medical service in the event of a radiation emergency.

Health Physics in Radiation Emergencies
This 4 1/2-day course is designed primarily for health physicists, medical physicists, radiation safety officers, and others who have radiation dose assessment and/or radiological control responsibilities.

Advanced Radiation Medicine
This 4 1/2-day course, designed primarily for physicians, nurses, clinical nurse practitioners, and physicians' assistants, presents an advanced level of information on the diagnosis and treatment of a wide range of ionizing radiation injuries and illnesses.

Pre-Hospital Radiation Emergency Preparedness
This 1 1/2-day course is tailored for pre-hospital, emergency medical service providers—such as firefighters, rescue personnel, and law enforcement agents—that may be directly involved in a radiological event. It also targets emergency planners and directors of fire, police and EMS units.

Accreditation

ORISE, which is managed by Oak Ridge Associated Universities, is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education for physicians. ORISE takes responsibility for the content, quality, and scientific integrity of this ACCME activity. Respective courses are also accredited by the American College of Emergency Physicians and the American Academy of Health Physics.

ORISE designates these educational activities for a certain number of American Medical Assocation Physician's Recognition Award (AMA PRA) Category 1 Credits™ (see specific course descriptions linked above for number of credits). Physicians should claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

Drill during REAC/TS course

Students in REAC/TS courses participate in drills that simulate a radiation incident. The drills allow them to apply hands-on the principles they have learned in radiation emergency medicine.
