Protecting Human Subjects - Oak Ridge Site-wide Institutional Review Board
Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) administers the Oak Ridge Site-Wide Institutional Review Board (IRB) for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office of Human Research Protection. In this role, ORAU:
- Provides the central focus for researchers, the IRB, and administrators in processing protocols,
- Arranges IRB review
- Keeps records and reporting
- Communicates pertinent information about human subjects research.
By direction of the Department of Energy (DOE) Oak Ridge Office (ORO), the Oak Ridge Site-wide IRB:
- Reviews proposed or continuing studies involving human participants conducted by employees or agents of ORAU, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, the Y-12 facility, and other facilities as determined by DOE/OR
- Serves as the cognizant site-specific IRB for research conducted by other entities sponsored by DOE or the DHHS involving current or former workers at the sites within ORO purview.
