Occupational Exposure and Worker Studies

Since 1977, the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE) has shared the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE’s) unwavering commitment to the protection of its workers through its epidemiologic studies. These studies focus primarily on occupational exposures as well as injuries and illnesses.

ORISE brings integrity and objectiveness combined with a proven systematic approach to ensure the quality of each study. This helps to ensure the trust of DOE's workers and their families.

We continue to meet DOE's evolving needs in worker health by integrating multiple programs effectively and efficiently. Follow the links below to learn more about our capabilities as well as to find more details on our current work.

Brief overviews spell out our capabilities in epidemiologic research.

Beryllium Exposure Studies and Testing
ORISE manages DOE's beryllium screening program, which consists of testing workers, managing a registry, running a specialized laboratory, and overseeing a beryllium-specific institutional review board.

Illness and Injury Surveillance
ORISE conducts illness and injury surveillance of more than 70,000 workers at 13 participating DOE sites to help DOE evaluate the safety of work being conducted.

Radiation Exposure Data Collection and Dose Reconstruction
ORISE manages data collection programs that are used to collect and analyze radiation exposure information for federal agency workers.

Protecting Human Subjects
ORISE partners with DOE to ensure that the highest ethical standards are maintained in research involving human subjects.

ORISE publishes reports on their worker surveillance work as well articles published in peer-reviewed journals.
