DOE Central Beryllium Institutional Review Board

The Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE) manages the Department of Energy (DOE) Central Beryllium Institutional Review Board (IRB). The IRB is jointly funded by DOE's Office of Science and Office of Health.

DOE formed this IRB as a result of the increased awareness about the prevalence of chronic beryllium disease in workers whose jobs involved beryllium-related weapons production and research. The IRB will provide any organization engaged in beryllium exposure, testing, or occupational disease research with the expertise and consistency needed to address human subjects protection issues.

Like other IRBs, the members are physicians and other scientific professionals, beryllium workers, community members, and lawyers.
