EHR ListServ: Communicating with Other EHR Users

What is a ListServ?

The IHS ListServ server is a computer that maintains mail boxes that receive simple e-mail messages and re-sends them to multiple recipients, or "subscribers" to the list. Members of the ListServ can send and receive emails regarding EHR issues. This enables individuals with common interests to conduct conversations and receive information that is relevant to their needs. There are currently three EHR ListServs (General EHR, EHR Inpatient, and EHR for Technical Staff) and one VistA Imaging ListServ.

Subscriptions to these ListServs are managed by the EHR/VI Programs in order to reduce the potential for "spam" messages that aggravate users and tie up mail systems. If you would like to be added to the IHS EHR or VI ListServ, please click on the appropriate "Subscribe" link(s) below. These links use your native email agent to send an email to the IHS EHR/VI ListServ moderators to subscribe to the ListServ. If you are using a Web based email client, copy "listserv@listserv.ihs.gov" into the Address field and copy the following in the body of the message (without the quotes): "subscribe ehr" for the general EHR ListServ, "subscribe ehrip" for the EHR Inpatient ListServ, "subscribe ehrtech" for the EHR Technical ListServ, or "subscribe vi" for the VistA Imaging ListServ. You may leave the Subject field blank.

If you are receiving messages from the ListServ and you would like these to stop, please click on the appropriate "Unsubscribe" link. If you are using a Web based email client, copy "listserv@listserv.ihs.gov" into the Address field and copy the following in the body of the message (without the quotes): "unsubscribe ehr" for the general EHR ListServ, "unsubscribe ehrip" for the EHR Inpatient ListServ, "unsubscribe ehrtech" for the EHR Technical ListServ, or "unsubscribe vi" for the VistA Imaging ListServ. You may leave the Subject field blank.

Please be sure to read the "Rules for EHR/VI ListServs" below.

Rules for EHR/VI ListServs:

  1. Every message must have a subject line.

  2. Subject lines must be relevant to the content of the message. Many people depend on the subject line to sort and file messages. Subject lines such as "Message to the ListServ" will not be forwarded to the ListServ.

  3. Messages should be brief, to the point, and address only one subject. If you have multiple unrelated questions, please put them in separate messages.

  4. NO BACKGROUNDS! Colored/graphical backgrounds increase the size of e-mail messages and make them harder to read. If you use a default background for your e-mail, please remove it before submitting messages to the ListServ.

  5. Be considerate and respectful in your selection of fonts and colors. Be aware that some font/color choices create the appearance of SHOUTING! Messages in non-standard fonts or colors will not be forwarded to the ListServ.

  6. Do not send personal responses to the ListServ. Remember if you hit "Reply" it means you are replying to the entire ListServ. Even if someone has been especially helpful to you, we will not forward "thank you" messages to the group. Use the "Forward" button to express your appreciation or other personal messages to individuals.

  7. Nothing that can remotely be construed as protected health information may be contained in the message body, images, or attachments. Demo patients must be clearly identified as such.

  8. Messages should not contain any type of software code (e.g. MUMPS code). If you have code that you believe would be of benefit to other users, please provide it to your Area Information Systems Coordinator and request that it be shared with other sites and Areas, and/or submit it to OIT as part of an enhancement request.

  9. The ListServ is not the Help Desk. The ListServ is great for answering questions about process and configuration, but if something is truly broken the ListServ will not fix it. Send your application problems to your local IT support person (usually the site manager). They will know the process for escalating the issue to the Area, and if necessary the OIT Help Desk.

  10. The ListServ is not the Feedback Page. If you have identified an interesting new enhancement possibility, please submit it through the RPMS Feedback page. No matter how interesting it is, please don't expect ListServ discussions to evolve into program enhancements.

  11. Please save your messages on your computer or register to access the ListServ archives (note: the ListServ archives are only available to those on the IHS Network). You can find instructions on how to access the ListServ archives below. To save the messages on your own computer, create a folder for the ListServ in your Personal Folders (.pst) and put messages there. You may find it useful to create one or more Outlook rules to send messages to your special folder (see below for instructions on how to do this). That way, when you know you've seen an answer to your question before, you can look first in your archive before sending it again to the list.

    Instructions:

The EHR/VI ListServs - especially the general EHR list with over 600 subscribers - are among the most highly used and valuable that we have ever had. We really appreciate the participation and exchange of ideas that take place here. We want to maximize the value of the ListServs for everyone, so please observe the rules.
