GOV. RITTER PROCLAIMS 'VETERANS' WIDOWS AND WIDOWERS DAY'

Gov. Ritter today proclaimed June 28 as "Veterans' Widows and Widowers Day" in Colorado. House Speaker Andrew Romanoff and Senate President Peter Groff issued a similar joint legislative resolution. The proclamation and resolution were issued today to help raise awareness about the sacrifices made by military widows and widowers in advance of the June 28 national day honoring them.

Here is the text of Gov. Ritter's proclamation:

WHEREAS, American military personnel have for more than two centuries fought and bled to defend the shores of our nation, both at home and abroad; and

WHEREAS, the wives and husbands of those who have fallen have shared the burden of sacrifice by giving their loved ones to the preservation of this bastion of freedom; and

WHEREAS, June 28 marks the earliest historical date that acknowledges military widows in the United States; and

WHEREAS, Veterans' Widows International Network, Inc. has devoted its existence to informing survivors about benefits for which they qualify, keeping survivors up to date on recent relevant legislation, and providing survivors with a sense of togetherness with other veterans' widows; and

WHEREAS, it is right and proper to recognize and support the widows and widowers of veterans for the grief they must bear and the sacrifices they have made for our state and nation;

Therefore, I, Bill Ritter, Jr., Governor of the State of Colorado, do hereby proclaim June 28, 2008, VETERANS' WIDOWS AND WIDOWERS DAY in the State of Colorado.
