The FBIjobs system makes it easy to review all FBI opportunities and to apply for any position(s) in which you are interested. To view all job postings and begin the application process, simply select View Jobs & Apply.

Before reviewing and applying for jobs, we encourage you to consider the following helpful hints and suggestions to make your application process as easy as possible:

Logging Into the FBIjobs System:

After selecting View Jobs & Apply and choosing Special Agent, Professional Staff or Contract Linguist, you will have three choices for how to log into the FBIjobs system:

  • Just Browsing
  • New Users
  • Registered Users

Just Browsing

By selecting "Just Browsing," you can browse and review job opportunities without registering with the FBIjobs system. By reading the details of each job announcement, you can determine whether you are interested in applying for a particular vacancy announcement. In order to apply for a job, however, you must first register with the FBIjobs system. Please note: individuals selecting the Special Agent option do not have the choice to browse because there is only one vacancy announcement for all Special Agent positions.

New Users

If this is your first time applying for a job on the FBIjobs system, you must first register with the system. Please select the "New Users" option and fill in all of the data fields requested. This information will only be used as part of the FBI job application process. At this point, you can also paste your Federal Resume into the space provided (you can also complete your resume later in the process). Because the FBI’s resume requirements are different from many private sector companies, we encourage you to review the Creating and Attaching Your Federal Resume section found below.

After completing all of the required fields, you also have the option to establish your FBIjobs email notification preferences. If you designate preferences, the FBIjobs system will notify you by email of new jobs posted to the site in which you might be interested. You can specify criteria such as job title/job type, salary level, and geography.

Once you complete all of the required registration fields, the system will assign you an FBIjobs ID number. Please store this number in a safe place. You may use either your ID number or your email address, along with your password, to reenter the system in the future.

Registered Users

If you are already registered with the FBIjobs system, please enter your User ID/email address and password, and select the appropriate option: "Go to Jobs", "View My Application Status", "Edit Personal Information and Resume", "Change Password", "Edit Demographic Information".

Applying for Jobs:

In order to apply for a job, you must first register with the FBIjobs system. After registering, you can apply to any vacancy currently posted. When applying to a vacancy, please carefully read and respond to the application questions.

Application questions will generally consist of both multiple choice questions and essay response questions. Most applications will have several pages of questions. Once you have provided answers to all of the questions on any page of the application, you can "Save" your work and return later to complete or update your application. Please note: you must answer all questions on the page marked with a red asterisk in order to be allowed to save your work. If you are on the last page of the application you can also select "Finish." As with the "Save" feature, you can return at any time to edit your responses, as long as the vacancy announcement has not closed.

In order to make changes to an incomplete application, simply select "View My Application Status" when you log into the FBIjobs system. In order to make changes to your resume, simply select "Edit Personal Information and Resume" when you log into the FBIjobs system.

When you have finalized your application, select the "Finished" button and your application will be submitted (as long as you have already included your resume). FBIjobs will then ask you whether you want a copy of the questions and your responses sent to your e-mail account. We encourage you to always select this option in order to verify the submission of your application.

You must complete your application (including the attachment of your Federal Resume) before the posting closes in order to be considered for a position. All announcements close at 11:59 p.m. Eastern Standard Time on the closing date of the announcement. Prior to the close of an announcement, you may update your application and resume at any time. Please note that any changes you make will not be reflected on any of your applications for vacancies that have already closed.

Creating and Attaching Your Federal Resume:

Preparing your resume is one of the first steps in seeking employment with the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Your resume should reflect a summary of your personal achievements and employment experiences. Although similar in nature to the type of resume you might prepare to apply for a job in the private sector, your Federal Resume must include certain specified data that may not be required when applying for jobs in the private sector. To receive proper consideration, please make sure your resume includes all of the following information:

  • Full Name
  • Mailing Address
  • Email Address
  • Day and Evening Telephone Numbers (including area code)
  • Education – Please include the following information as applicable:
    • High School – School name, city, and state, date of diploma or GED
    • College/University – School name, city and state, major field of study, type of degree and year received. Also include total credits earned and indicate whether semester or quarter hours
    • Vocational/trade/technical school – School name, city and state, date of certificate or graduation
  • Work Experience – Include details on all paid and unpaid work experiences that are relevant to the job for which you are applying. (Special Agent applicants should include all of their full-time work experiences). List your most recent jobs first. For each job include:
    • Job title (and grade level, if it was a Federal job)
    • Duties and accomplishments
    • Employer’s name and address
    • Supervisor’s name and telephone number
    • Starting and ending dates (month and year)
    • Hours worked per week
    • Salary
  • Other Qualifications – Include things such as job-related training courses, job-related skills (e.g., typing speed), computer software/hardware skills, foreign language proficiency, job-related honors, awards, special accomplishments, publications, memberships in professional or honor societies, leadership activities, and performance awards

Before you start preparing your FBIjobs resume, please be sure to follow these simple pointers.

DO

  • Develop your resume using a word processing program such as Microsoft Word or WordPerfect
  • Make sure your resume is easy to read and understand
  • Include all appropriate dates and make sure that they are in sequence
  • Address relevant experiences that coincide with the vacancy questions
  • Copy and paste your resume into the FBIjobs system. If you need to edit your resume, make the edits in Microsoft Word or WordPerfect, and then reinsert your resume into FBIjobs
  • Use the resume "check length" tool to avoid error messages. Please note: the FBIjobs character limitation for resumes is 16,000 characters (approximately eight single-spaced pages of text)

DO NOT

  • Try to type, edit, or print your resume in FBIjobs
  • Use large margins. Please keep white space to a minimum
  • Use fancy fonts, bold text, unusual formats, or graphics

You must enter a resume by the time a specific vacancy closes in order to be considered for that position. FBIjobs will automatically attach your resume to your application when you apply to a vacancy.

You can edit and/or update your resume in the FBIjobs system at any time. To edit your resume, log in using your User ID/Email and password, and select the "Edit Personal Information or Resume" option. Please note that any changes you make will not be reflected on any of your applications for vacancies that have already closed.

Generating Fax Cover Sheets:

We are now using the fax imaging capabilities within our automated application software. This means you can fax your documents into the system and they will be electronically attached to your application. The following are some general guidelines for submitting your documentation. Please be certain to refer to the vacancy announcement for vacancy specific faxing instructions.

  1. You must use the fax cover sheets generated through the application process and you must fax to the number listed on the fax cover sheets.
  2. There is one cover sheet for each category of supporting documentation. Fax all pages related to that category of supporting documentation behind the corresponding coversheet. If you are faxing more than one type of supporting documentation, you must submit those with the corresponding cover sheet. DO NOT FAX ALL DOCUMENT TYPES UNDER ONE COVER SHEET. Transcripts are one type of document. Fax all pages of your transcript and other education-related documents under the transcript cover sheet. The SF-50 is another document type. If you are faxing more than one SF-50, fax those under the SF-50 cover sheet. Fax each document separately. For example, if you have to send five documents you will need to send five separate faxes with five different fax cover sheets as the first page in each set.
  3. Not all of the document categories listed will pertain to you. Only submit the documents required to complete your application package. For example, the SF-50 is a form current and former Federal employees submit to document their Federal employment status.
  4. Confirmation emails are sent automatically after we receive the faxed cover sheet. This email confirmation is your official receipt of submission. The fax confirmation generated by the fax machine is NOT your official receipt of submission.
  5. Failure to submit supporting documents as specified in the announcement by 11:59 pm Eastern Standard Time (EST) on the closing date of the vacancy announcement will result in an incomplete application. Applicants who submit incomplete applications will NOT be considered for this vacancy announcement.

If you have previously faxed supporting documentation to the announcement, the status of those documents will indicate Received. There is no need to resubmit documents which show a status of "Received" unless you are submitting an updated copy. If a document is resubmitted, it replaces the previous document(s), which means the previous document(s) is no longer viewable. If you are adding to, rather than replacing, a previous submission, you must fax both the old document(s) and the new document(s) for both to be viewable

New Users:
If you are an applicant who has NEVER registered with the FBI's automated recruitment system, you can fax standard documentation like Transcripts, DD214, VA Letters, and SF-15 during the registration process. Go to the FBI's login page at www.fbijobs.gov and select the Generate Fax Cover Sheets radio button.

Logging Out of the FBIjobs System:

The best way to "log out" of FBIjobs is to simply close the window on your browser. This will prevent anyone else from using your FBIjobs account without your knowledge. If you are in the middle of working on an application, please make sure to "Save" your work before you close your browser.

Yes. FBIjobs is run on a private secure system and the FBI is the owner of the data. The system meets the Bureau's stringent security requirements.

2. Is FBIjobs the only way to submit an application for FBI positions?

Yes. All applicants must submit their applications online, using the FBIjobs system.

3. What if I need help applying online?

For assistance in applying for an FBIjobs vacancy, you may contact the Human Resources Specialist listed on the vacancy announcement. If applying online poses a hardship to you, you must call the Human Resources Specialist before the closing date of the announcement to request assistance.

4. If the system only accepts online applications, how do I send other attachments, such as my college transcripts, SF-50's, etc.?

We are now using the fax imaging capabilities within our automated application software. This means you can fax your supplemental documents into the system and they will be electronically attached to your application. Please refer to "Generate Fax Cover Sheets" on our website for more information.

5. If I am not selected for a position, who should I contact to find out why?

If you are found ineligible for a particular position, you will receive an email explaining the reason why. You may contact the Human Resources Specialist listed on the vacancy announcement for further explanation.

6. Is there any way I can see which positions I have applied for and find out the status of these vacancies?

Yes. When logging in to FBIjobs, select "View My Application Status." You will be able to see a complete list of all vacancies to which you have applied and the current status of each application.

7. Who should submit a SF-50 and performance appraisal?

Only current and former Federal government employees should submit a SF-50 and performance appraisal. The SF-50 is a form that documents a person's Federal employment status. The submitted SF-50 should reflect the full performance level of the person's Federal position.

Supporting Documents for Consideration under a Special Placement Program:

Noncompetitive Hiring of Individuals with Disabilities: The FBI has established a noncompetitive appointing authority similar to that used in the competitive service under the Schedule A (5 CFR 213.3102(u)) for individuals with mental retardation, severe physical disabilities, and/or psychiatric disabilities. Supporting documentation for consideration under this authority includes certification of job readiness (for consideration to a permanent appointment) and proof of qualifying disability issued from a licensed medical professional, a licensed vocational rehabilitation specialist, or any Federal or State agency or an agency of D.C. or a U.S. territory that issues or provides disability benefits, i.e., a "certification" statement that identifies you as a person with a disability and that describes your ability to perform the essential duties of the position in which you are interested. For additional information please visit OPM's Federal Employment of People with Disabilities at http://www.opm.gov/disability/

Veteran Employment: The FBI has established noncompetitive appointing authorities similar to those used in competitive service agencies for individuals eligible under the Veterans' Recruitment Authority, 30 Percent or more disabled veterans, and the competitive authority under the Veterans Employment Opportunities Act. For consideration under one of these authorities, please submit a copy of your DD-214. The SF-15, with appropriate documentation, must also be submitted when claiming 10 point preference, and/or consideration as a 30 percent or more disabled veteran.
