White
Christmas in Amarillo?
|
Weather records dating back to 1892 show that Amarillo has only
seen 14 days of snow falling on Christmas Day, but only 5 of those
days reported snofall of 1 inch or more. There have been 30 Christmas
days where snow was observed on the ground or falling, and 16 days
where the snow covering the ground was at least 1 inch deep. The most
snow to ever fall on Christmas Day was 4.3 inches in 1939 while the
most snow depth on Christmas day was 10.0 inches in 1918 (this was
likely a result of snowfall from previous days that had not melted).
Since you need 1 inch of snow on the ground to be clasified as a true
White Christmas, there have a total of 16 White Chritmases in the
last 115 years. In other words, the odds of having a White Christmas
is about 1 in 7 years. |
Amarillo, on average, experiences some form of a white Christmas
once every 4 years. The longest time without a white Christmas was
a span of 12 years, from 1926-1939. |
