National Environmental Health Association (NEHA)

The National Environmental Health Association (NEHA) works through its 5,000 members to advance the environmental health and protection profession. Incorporated in 1937, the original impetus behind the creation of this national association was to establish a standard of excellence for this developing profession.

NEHA Logo

In pursuit of its mission, NEHA sponsors a variety of programs including eight professional credentials, which indicate proficiency in specific areas of environmental health; an annual educational conference; and a number of annual technical workshops. The Association also publishes the widely respected and peer-reviewed Journal of Environmental Health and the Food Environment News Digest, and supports professional continuing education.

Under a cooperative agreement, the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) and NEHA are working together to provide environmental health professionals, first responders, and emergency medical personnel training on how to respond to the threats posed by terrorism.
Under the cooperative agreement, NEHA has

  • Established an advisory panel of experts
  • Assessed the current response capabilities of its membership of environmental health professionals, including first responders and emergency medical personnel
  • Developed criteria for an education guidance document for instruction and planning
  • Developed a comprehensive dissemination and implementation strategy
  • Established criteria and content for a pilot workshop using the guidance document
  • Held pilot regional workshops
  • Assessed project effectiveness through an increased local capacity for handling terrorist acts
