American College of Medical Toxicology (ACMT)The American College of Medical Toxicology (ACMT) is a professional organization for board-certified toxicologists. Toxicologists play a major role in poison control centers, inpatient and outpatient medical care facilities, medical school, private industry, and government agencies. The College is dedicated to advancing the science and practice of medical toxicology, to improving the quality of care given to patients with toxicology-related medical problems, and to expanding patient access to board-certified medical toxicologists. Since 1968, ACMT has co-sponsored the annual North American Congress of Clinical Toxicology, an interdisciplinary meeting of more than 500 physicians, poison information specialists, pharmacists, and nurses engaged in toxicology practice, teaching, and/or research. The Congress features peer-reviewed presentations and posters on current research, clinical developments, public policy, and practice management. Other ACMT activities include:
ACMT also encourages public policy that advances the treatment and prevention of poisoning, drug safety, and occupational and environmental health. ACMT members serve as representatives to public or private advisory committees and many are active as faculty and preceptors in the more than 2 dozen medical toxicology training programs. Under the new 5-year cooperative agreement with ATSDR, ACMT plans to expand its infrastructure and activities via Internet-based resources, live symposia, and risk communication workshops. The College also intends to develop a pediatric environmental health monograph series. In the first year of the cooperative agreement, ACTM will focus on developing an educational monograph on Iodine 131.
