FHA Activities - Current Tasks


FHA is actively involved in national health IT initiatives to ensure that the federal voice is heard in the areas of standards selection, systems certification criteria, the development of a nationwide health IT network and other health IT issues. As the health IT community moves forward in support of the President's health IT plan, the FHA will continue to broaden its participation and provide a forum for the federal health community to collaborate and establish priorities for health IT interoperability.

Below is a status regarding some of FHA's Current Tasks that support the advancement of health IT throughout the federal space.

FHA Review of NHIN Functional Requirements

Objective

To facilitate federal cross-agency participation in the development of a nationwide health information network.

Value

  • To increase the quality of federal participation through direct input into the NHIN process and cross-agency collaboration.
  • To inform agencies on NHIN and the NHIN development process.
  • To provide subject matter expertise in a spectrum of subjects.
  • To provide a moderated federal tone and approach in their interactions with private, state and local organizations.

Deliverables

  • Summary Report on Federal Role Team Comments
  • Comments on individual Functional Requirements

Timeline

May 14 - June 27: Completed role-based collaborations across federal agencies.
June 28 - 29: Completed support to NHIN Forum
July 27: Presented findings and comments of the FHA NHIN Functional Review Teams to the NCVHS Executive Subcommittee
September 30: Deliver NHIN Minimum Initial Set of Functional Requirements to AHIC.


Emergency Response EHR Use Case

Objective

To develop a use case for the deployment of EHRs for usage in emergency response situations.

Value

  • To support the AHIC EHR Workgroup by drafting a use case for EHR usage in emergency response situations.
  • To work with federal agencies and other interested stakeholders to document the requirements for interoperable EHRs.
  • To advance federal health IT interoperability and support improvement to federal emergency response.

  • Use Case Working Group Plan

Timeline

September 30: Draft of Use Case completed
October 31: Final Use Case Approved


Coordination with the Health IT Policy Council (HITPC)

Objective

To coordinate standards adoption activities between HITPC and FHA.

Value

  • To stay informed of current policies affecting federal agencies.
  • To ensure that HITPC and FHA collaborate and leverage existing and future work.
  • To ensure that federal agencies are informed of and can leverage FHA and HITPC activities, so that implementation of selected standards and certification efforts are coordinated.

Deliverables

  • TBD

Timeline

  • Weekly coordination meetings between FHA and HITPC.
  • Quarterly review by FHA Leadership.

Federal Health IT Standards Adoption Implementation Guidance

Objective

To facilitate adoption of HITSP standards by agencies.

Value

  • To facilitate adoption by agencies of standards selected by the HITSP process.
  • To assist participating federal agencies in responding to AHIC's recommendation regarding plans for adoption of HITSP standards.
  • To provide a central forum for agency standards implementation efforts.
  • To advance federal health IT interoperability, support accountability for agency health IT activity.

Deliverables

  • Template for agency implementation plan for HITSP standards.

Timeline

August 1: Implementation Plan Templates completed
December 31: Agency standards implementation plans approved by agency (department) leader and submitted to AHIC.
