Daniel Bernoulli was a Swiss
mathematician and physicist born in 1700. In 1783 he formulated the
Bernoulli Principle. The principle is very complicated but it had an
effect on all the men who attempted to make flying machines at the
turn of the century. The Wright brothers used the principle to
help them create their flying machine.
Did you even put
your hand out as you were riding your bike or stick your hand out of the
window as you were driving down the road in a car? Give it a try (make sure a
grown up says it is ok.) If the front part of your hand is higher
(further away from the ground) than the back part of your hand the
force of the air pushes against your hand and forces it to rise. If
the front part of your hand is lower than the back part of your hand
the force of the air pushes against your hand and forces it down.

THE FORCE OF THE WIND WILL PUSH YOUR HAND UP JUST LIKE IT DOES
FOR A PLANE
