Pavement Knowledge System

The Pavement and Materials Forum is an internal group that brings together leaders from Headquarters and field offices to direct and coordinate the Federal Highway Administration's (FHWA) pavement and materials program. One of the key focus areas identified for the program is technical capability building and knowledge management. To this end, representatives of various offices working on pavement-related issues have established this topic-based website as the one central source of FHWA's technical information on pavements. The Pavement Knowledge System will also host other valuable technical resources for pavement engineers and contractors including:

  • Communities of Practice: For example, the Design Guide Implementation Team (DGIT) is collecting the thoughts, issues, and concerns of users, who have received the NCHRP 1-37A Design Guide, using a community of practice.
  • Updating of Pavement Notebook: The Pavement Notebook contains pavement policy and technical guidance and serves as the voice of FHWA concerning pavement matters. The Office of Pavement Technology is updating the content of the "old" Pavement Notebook. The information below is from the "old" Pavement Notebook and should not be used as technical guidance.

The old pavement notebook is available in PDF format from the DOT On Line Publication site (ISDDC).
