Program Description

This is an interdisciplinary postdoctoral health services research training program under the auspices of the Institute for Healthcare Studies at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, Chicago, Illinois.

The Institute is a Medical School entity with full-time research faculty and staff appointed through the Institute, as well as affiliated faculty based in academic departments (Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, Emergency Medicine, Obstetrics and Gynecology, and Preventive Medicine) and in affiliated institutions and centers (Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago, Children's Memorial Hospital, Center for Research and Evaluation, Evanston Northwestern Healthcare, Midwest Center for Health Services Policy Research, and Buehler Center on Aging) and in graduate and professional schools throughout the university.

In addition to its core faculty and programs, the Institute integrates its activities with health services research units in affiliated hospitals and other organizations. Institute core faculty and departmental faculty serve as mentors for postdoctoral trainees. The doctoral training and coursework for all trainees builds on existing department-based programs. All fellows generally have two mentors to ensure both substantive and disciplinary-specific guidance.

The postdoctoral training program focuses upon the research development of both clinical and research doctorates. During the first-year of the program, fellows participate in ongoing faculty research projects but are expected to develop and implement an independent research project by the end of their first-year. Physicians may be required to take additional coursework in a specific research discipline (e.g., economics, sociology). Fellows can select to earn one of four Master degrees. Support for postdoctoral fellows using Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) funds is generally provided for 2 years. The AHRQ National Research Service Award (NRSA) fellowship program is integrated with parallel health services research fellowship programs, supported by the National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research (NIDRR) and the Health Services Research VA Fellowship.

All fellows also participate in a research-in-progress seminar directed by the fellows themselves, which meets weekly, and a weekly seminar series with presentations from local and national scholars on health services research and related issues.
