International Visitors Program: 2006

One of the busiest components of the International Center's activities is the International Visitor Program. In 2006, the International Center coordinated or participated in 40 meetings at the Office of Justice Programs (OJP) and the National Institute of Justice (NIJ).

These meetings informed 138 visitors from 32 countries about NIJ and other OJP agencies. The meetings provided opportunities for NIJ and other OJP agency staff to discuss their ongoing work with specialists and experts from other countries.

The international visitors also provided valuable insight into the experiences of their own countries' criminal justice activities. Most importantly, these meetings gave OJP and NIJ a chance to disseminate information on cutting-edge criminal justice research and programs on a one-to-one basis, which allowed the creation of future international contacts and collaboration.

In 2006, the U.S. State Department requested 13 meetings through the International Center. Fifteen visits focused on transnational crime, a research priority for the International Center. Terrorism was the topic in five of these meetings, and human trafficking was the focus of four meetings.

The International Center also helped coordinate briefing programs at the request of the Embassy of the Republic of Korea, the Embassy of Australia, the British Embassy, and the Royal Netherlands Embassy. More highlights from the 2006 program included visits by a congressman from the Philippines and a senator from Paraguay. Visitors from the Israeli Ministry of Public Security and the Chinese Institute for Crime Prevention were treated to multiday meetings and site visits, as well as meetings with staff from each OJP agency and with Assistant Attorney General Regina Schofield. Through the International Center's relationship with the British Embassy, two international seminars were conducted that featured officials from the British Government.

As requested, the International Center also coordinated meetings with other Department of Justice (DOJ) components as well as with agencies and programs outside DOJ and OJP.
