CHRNS Proposals

CHRNS offers the use of neutron scattering instrumentation to all qualified users based on peer-reviewed proposals. Calls for proposals are normally issued every six or seven months. Go to the NCNR home page for information regarding the most recent call for proposals.

The primary review of proposals is done by mail using expert referees chosen by NIST staff. In addition, NCNR scientists carry out reviews for safety and technical feasibility. After mail reviews have been obtained, a Beam Time Allocation Committee (BTAC) meets to rank the proposals and allocate beam time to each successful proposal for each CHRNS station. The actual scheduling of experiments is carried out by CHRNS staff. If a higher degree of confidentiality is desired, a proposer may request that his or her proposal not be sent out for external mail review, but be reviewed instead by the BTAC. Such proposals are held to a higher standard than proposals that have been externally peer-reviewed.

The current BTAC membership is listed at http://www.ncnr.nist.gov/call/proprev_and_beamtime.html.

For the USANS, SPINS, DCS, HFBS, and NSE instruments, 67% of the beam time is available to guest researchers through the proposal system. For the 30-m SANS the available fraction of beam time is 75%.
