Social Security Administration (SSA) reviews disability cases periodically to see if the person with a disability still meets SSA disability rules. SSA performs two types of reviews, a medical continuing disability review and a work continuing disability review. Under a work review, SSA looks at earnings to determine if an individual is eligible for monthly benefits. A medical review determines if an individual is meeting the medical requirements to collect disability. If the person does not meet the medical requirements, SSA may stop the disability benefits.

As described below, the Ticket to Work and Work Incentive Improvement Act (TWWIIA) of 1999 gives protection from a medical continuing disability review for some disabled individuals who want to go to work:

  • SSA will be issuing a Ticket to Work to most disabled beneficiaries. SSA will not conduct continuing disability reviews for beneficiaries who are using the ticket. Refer to the fact sheet for more information on Ticket to Work.

  • Effective January 1, 2002, if an individual has been receiving benefits for two years, SSA will not conduct a medical continuing disability review solely because an individual returns to work. If you have any questions, please call Social Security Administration toll-free at 1-800-772-1213.

For those interested in more information on the Ticket to Work, visit SSA's Work Site.
