Prefire sampling is done to assess fuel loads and fuel moisture.
During the fires, temperatures are recorded using dataloggers as shown
in the middle picture. Fires are left to extinguish naturally as would
occur in wildfires. A crew will watch the fire for days, if not weeks
until it is certain that the fire has completely died out.
Average flame length and rate of spread is recorded to assess fire behavior.
The fire is contained to the 5 X 5 meter plot area using water in addition
to hand tools.
