The best idea i have heard is to have a pole with a slight hum so we can locate the button to push. After the button is pushed we should be able to hear either walk and after walk a chirping sound until the signal says don't walk.

These could be installed whenever the current signals wear out , except, for especially dangerous intersections which need the installation right away.
