I want you to know that I firmly support the PROWAC report and that we need to have detectable warnings at places where vehicular traffic is likely to be found and we need accessible pedestrian signals. Detectable warning strips in subways and train platforms are also needed. These are not luxuries we are asking for; they are absolute, non-negotiable necessities. I am an excellent, independent traveler. I primarily get around with a guide dog, but also have kept up my white cane skills. I live in New York city, and it is essential that I know exactly where the sidewalk ends and the road begins, that I have absolute control of when my foot steps from the safety of the sidewalk into the river of traffic. With most crossings now having cut-away curbs, to make them accessible for wheelchair users, knowing the precise moment where the sidewalk becomes the street is virtually impossible. This is no joke. Pleas help us to be safe and independent on our way to work, home, or to see family and friends.
