The United States is the largest, most sophisticated producer of refined petroleum products in the world.

The Petroleum Refining Industry of the Future partnership equipped the U.S. refining industry with more energy-efficient technologies and new tools for identifying energy-saving opportunities. This cost-shared research and development (R&D) partnership between the industry and the DOE's Industrial Technologies Program (ITP) continues to provide energy and cost benefits for the entire industry.

Petroleum satisfies 40% of all U.S. energy needs and provides about 97% of U.S. transportation fuels. Maintaining the viability of the U.S. petroleum refining industry requires continuous improvement in productivity and energy efficiency.

As a former participant in the Industries of the Future partnership, the U.S. petroleum refining industry achieved the following:

  • Set a united vision (PDF 685 KB) and goals for the future
  • Clearly defined its R&D priorities in a technology roadmap (PDF 339 KB) Download Adobe Reader.
  • Developed a portfolio of innovative projects
  • Tapped into a wealth of publications on opportunities to save energy
  • Accelerated progress toward major technology breakthroughs

The petroleum refining industry has embraced the many benefits of energy efficiency and currently pursues its own robust R&D portfolio. Many of the collaborative R&D projects completed through its Industry of the Future partnership continue to yield energy, environmental, and cost benefits to the industry. In addition, many of the publications, tip sheets, software tools, and other resources developed through the partnership are in active use at U.S. refineries, helping to identify opportunities for energy and cost savings.

Solicitations

The Petroleum Refining Industries of the Future program is currently not funding any active projects and has no solicitations planned for the near future. However, ITP funds highly relevant R&D in the chemical and petrochemical industries through the Chemicals Industry of the Future.
