Energy Analysis

The Industrial Technologies Program regularly conducts analytic studies to identify energy efficiency opportunities. Petroleum refining studies include:

Energy Bandwidth for Petroleum Refining Processes

The petroleum refining energy bandwidth report analyzes the most energy-intensive unit operations used in U.S. refineries: crude oil distillation, fluid catalytic cracking, catalytic hydrotreating, catalytic reforming, and alkylation. The "bandwidth" provides a snapshot of the energy losses that can potentially be recovered through best practices and technology R&D.

Energy and Environmental Profile of the Petroleum Refining Industry (Updated)

This 2007 report (PDF 1.7 MB) provides an overview of the U.S. petroleum refining industry, including new data on market trends and energy and material consumption, as well as information on environmental performance. Download Adobe Reader.

Footprints

The U.S. Manufacturing and Mining Energy Footprints provide a graphical representation of the flow of energy across the most energy-intensive industries. The footprints show where energy is used inside plant boundaries, where losses occur on-site, which are the most widely used energy systems for each industry, and much more.

Energy Use and Loss Analysis

This 2004 report provides a thorough analysis of the energy consumption and losses associated with the top energy-intensive industries. This document also provides energy use rankings across industries and a detailed look at industrial energy systems, such as combustion, combined heat and power, motors, and others. The report will be available in November 2004. The Energy Information Administration division of DOE has developed a comprehensive statistical analysis of the petroleum refining industry with data on energy use.
