Groundwater Remediation Sites Land with contaminated groundwater may undergo a remediation process, which partly consists of pumping out the groundwater and treating it to remove contaminates. Then the treated water may be disposed of into the sewerage system. All businesses planning groundwater remediation discharges must first receive a discharge permit from the King County Industrial Waste Program, phone 206-263-3000. In order to be given permission to discharge to the sewer, businesses proposing discharges greater than 25,000 gallons per day during the "wet months" (November through April) must show that it is not feasible to discharge to surface waters or to on-site subsurface infiltration systems. KCIW revised the maximum concentrations allowed in discharges for groundwater remediation sites in 2006. Discharges from petroleum-contaminated soils have the following limits:
A King County Public Rule covers discharge of groundwater to the sewer.
