Under the direction of the Fire Marshal, the Fire Prevention Bureau is responsible for the development, administration, and enforcement of the Albuquerque Fire Code for all commercial buildings. They are also responsible for community fire prevention education, new construction plans review and inspection, smoking and tobacco ordinances, the Juvenile Fire-Setter Program, and special events planning.
The Fire Prevention Bureau is responsible for the issuance of permits for the storage, handling, and use of hazardous materials. They are also tasked with the enforcement of the Ground Water Protection Policy and Action Plan (GPPAP) which was adopted by the City Council in August 1994. The policy is intended to prevent, control, and mitigate conditions that pose a threat to ground-water quality relative to the manufacture, storage, use, or handling of hazardous materials and wastes.
