Consumers are being reminded this fall to read the labels carefully on juice or cider products they purchase. A release to television and radio station newsrooms nationwide explained why young children maybe particularly at risk for developing foodborne illness from drinking untreated juices and advised consumers to look for warning labels on these products.
A new "Food Safety Facts for Consumers" fact sheet on juice safety was also posted on the web at www.foodsafety.gov/~dms/fs-toc.html#juice and www.foodsafety.gov/~fsg/produce.html
Shortly after the September terrorist attack, CFSAN began an active outreach effort to our federal, state and local food safety officials, the regulated industry and international counterparts. These contacts have requested assistance and guidance to improve their crisis management planning and emergency response operations. In response to this request and as part of CFSAN's on-going process for counter-terrorism preparedness, we partnered with the US Air Force's Office of the Surgeon General to produce a Food Safety and Security guide and PowerPoint presentation, using Operational Risk Management systems approach.
The Food Safety and Security: Operational Risk Management Systems Approach and companion PowerPoint Presentation have been provided to the industry, consumer groups, State and Local governments, other federal agencies and to our international counterparts.
Both documents will be made available on the Internet.
The Food Safety Constituent Update is now available by e-mail. If you prefer to receive the update via e-mail instead of fax, please send an e-mail request to chall@cfsan.fda.gov.
