William H. Gurtner, Vice President
Prior to joining the University
of California in 1996, William H. Gurtner was
President and CEO of HCP, a Partnership for Health,
and served as Senior Vice President for Network
Development for the Daughters of Charity National
Health System - West.
From 1987 to 1994, Mr. Gurtner was Senior Vice
President of Health Industry Services for Blue
Cross of California where his responsibilities
included provider contracting, Medicare, the Healthcare
Transaction Network and provider collections.
Prior to joining Blue Cross, Mr. Gurtner was Chief
Executive Officer of Weissburg and Aronson, a
full-service law firm specializing in health care
issues. In addition to administrative duties,
Mr. Gurtner provided nonlegal consulting to clients
on health care matters.
He joined Weissburg and Aronson in 1985 after
serving 10 years as head of Mount Zion Hospital
and Medical Center, a not-for-profit community
teaching hospital in San Francisco. He joined
the staff of Mount Zion as an administrative resident
in 1970, becoming President and Chief Executive
Officer in 1975.
An active participant in managed care and educational
activities, Mr. Gurtner has been a lecturer in
hospital administration at UC Berkeley and a faculty
member of the Health Services Management/ MBA
program, UCLA. He has also consulted on issues
of managed care and health care management both
in the United States and abroad.
Mr. Gurtner holds a Bachelor
of Arts degree from San Francisco State University
and a Master of Public Health degree from the
University of California at Berkeley.
