NeMO had two, almost simultaneous, cruises to Axial Volcano in 2001. The NOAA Ship Ron Brown will departed on July 14, then the R/V Wecoma departed July 16, both from Newport, OR. The Wecoma sampled water for temperature, gas and particulates and recovered/placed moorings which monitor the hydrothermal plumes. The Ron Brown used a remotely operated vehicle, ROPOS, to explore and sample the hydrothermal vents on the seafloor and their surroundings. |
