NPVU - Available DataThe tables and information below are intended to be a guide for the user to determine what type of statistical data are available and when it first became available for various RFCs. Not all RFC statistics were begun at the same time (month/year). On the web site link which gives choices for month/year combinations, please be aware that not all of these will necessarily be available for every RFC due to these different start times. Thus, for instance, if you want to examine CNRFC statistics for September 2000...there will be no data available and a note to the effect that the graphic does not exist will appear (as well as the table to choose another option). Note also that "Day 1", "Day 2", and "Day 3" refer to a conglomeration of all 6-hourly forecasts for that day taken together, and do not refer to a 24-hour total amount. The 9 EASTERN RFC REGIONS include:
•Monthly statistics of individual 6-hourly
precipitation forecasts through 24 hours and for the Day 1 period as a whole,
available year-round
The 3 WESTERN RFC REGIONS include:
•Monthly statistics of individual 6-hourly
precipitation forecasts through 24 hours as well as for the Day 1 and Day 2
periods as a whole, available year-round; the Day 3 period as a whole, is
available from approx. mid-October through mid-May (and corresponds to the
period when HPC issues its 6-hourly QPF out through 72 hours)
The **2000-2001 Cold Season statistics for CBRFC and CNRFC include only the time period November 2000 through March 2001, rather than the typical October-March period. Though October 2000 was not available, it was thought appropriate to still compute 2000-2001 Cold Season results. All subsequent cold seasons cover the regular period. The CONUS (all RFCs together) includes:
•Monthly statistics for Day 1 as a whole
MISCELLANEOUS NOTES:The ETA model extends through 84 hours as of 17 April 2001. Thus, any Day 3 plots and statistics for the Western RFCs will now also include the Eta model for comparison, starting in October 2001. Volumetric Bias plots for the continuous statistics are available, starting with July 2002. These plots are shown for the combined "Observed & Forecast" score stratification (since this score will be identical for the Observed, Forecast, and Observed+Forecast stratifications). CONUS statistics are computed for Day 1 as a whole only. The reasons for this include: (1) we already could have issues with the accuracy of CONUS statistics due to known problems with some of the QPE data, especially in frozen precipitation situations, thus a conglomerate 1-day total of the 6-hour forecasts is sufficient and reasonable for now, (2)individual 6-hourly statistics, while of use for individual RFCs, might not add much useful information for the CONUS as a whole, and (3)computing statistics for the CONUS is much more computationally intensive than for RFCs taken individually, and doing Day 1 statistics only would cut down significantly on this. Finally, no Day 2 or Day 3 CONUS statistics are given, since only the Western RFCs issue such forecasts...thus these would not be complete for the entire U.S. Day 3 statistics for the CBRFC, CNRFC, and NWRFC, as mentioned above, are computed from approximately mid-October through mid-May. This corresponds to the time frame when HPC issues its 6-hourly forecasts through Day 3. The "start date" of Day 3 QPF issuance by HPC is pretty well fixed at October 15, but the "end date" can vary; this end date is usually May 15, but at times this may be extended for various reasons.
