February 7, 2006, is National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness
Day. Created by the
Community Capacity Building Coalition and funded by the Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), this annual event strives to educate
African Americans and others about HIV/AIDS, encourage testing, and motivate
communities throughout the country to get involved in the fight against
HIV/AIDS.
|
|
In 2005, the CDC reported that African Americans
represent 13% of the total U.S. population, but account for 49% of all AIDS
cases. HIV/AIDS is the leading cause of death for African Americans ages 25 to
44 (CDC 2004 HIV/AIDS Surveillance Report).
