Aberdeen Area Today and Tomorrow
IHS was able to realize its goal of delivering the highest quality health services with the opening of four new health care facilities. The full service hospitals in Belcourt, ND, Pine Ridge and Rosebud, SD, provide patients with state-of-the-art equipment and 24-hour care. The new clinic in Kyle, SD, brings much needed outpatient services to the area and accommodates approximately 18,000 annual visits.
The Quentin N. Burdick Memorial Hospital in Belcourt is a recently remodeled facility serving the 9,500 members of the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa. The 11-physician JCAHO accredited facility has the capabilities to provide general surgery, pediatric, obstetrics, emergency care, and alcohol detox.
The 46-bed Pine Ridge Hospital, serving a Sioux Indian population of more than 17,000, is the largest in the Aberdeen Area. A 16-physician staff sees medical, obstetrical, pediatric, and surgical patients. The facility includes full service general surgery and an obstetrical ward. Dental care is provided at the main hospital as well as at four satellite clinics.
The Kyle Health Center located on the Pine Ridge Reservation is an ambulatory care center with outpatient services. The outpatient department is staffed with one physician, two registered nurses, an LPN, a nurse practitioner, pharmacist, optometrist, laboratory technician, radiology technician, and a part-time nurse/mid-wife. In addition, the Health Center offers dental services, with four operatories, mental health services, public health nurses, and environmental health care.
A 35-bed comprehensive medical/surgical hospital with active obstetric and pediatric departments offers a full range of services to the Rosebud Reservation. The new facility and several field clinics are staffed by 11 physicians, nurse/midwives, and physician assistants. An optical department and dental care are also offered.
