FHWA to Award Grants to Spur Highway Technology Innovation
The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) will award $1 million to spur innovation through the second round of grants under its Highways for LIFE (HfL) Technology Partnerships Program. The program is designed to help companies refine and further develop promising innovations that reduce congestion from construction and improve highway safety and quality. Five grants were awarded earlier this year in the first round of the program (see January/February 2008 Focus).
Pavement Recycling Technology Deployment: Meeting Today's Environmental and Economic Challenges
As transportation agencies across the United States look to meet today’s environmental and economic challenges, the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) is asking agencies to “consider recycling first.” State and local agencies and contractors can realize economic, environmental, and engineering benefits by incorporating previously used high-quality materials into the rehabilitation and reconstruction of the country’s roadway network. The current FHWA recycling policy was issued on February 7, 2002, and is available online at www.fhwa.dot.gov/legsregs/directives/policy/recmatmemo.htm.

Ninth International Conference on Concrete Pavements: Tomorrow’s Concrete Pavements Today
Enter the “Golden Gate to Tomorrow’s Concrete Pavements” at the Ninth International Conference on Concrete Pavements, to be held August 17–21, 2008, in San Francisco, California. The conference will present information on new technologies related to the design, construction, and rehabilitation of concrete pavements, including continuously reinforced concrete pavements, ultra-thin whitetopping and thin concrete paving, pavement analysis and performance prediction, concrete mix design, fiber-reinforced concrete pavements, and pavement ride quality and safety. Twenty different sessions on various topics will be offered, as well as optional site visits to local construction projects on the last day of the conference.
