Volume 1 Issue 1, will give you insights into what it means to be an Indian Health Service (IHS) Division of Oral Health Employee. Joining IHS can enrich your career and your life. Here's what doctors Dan and Kristi Newton, newlyweds and recent grads, have to say about their work and lifestyle as IHS dentists in Fort Defiance, Arizona.

In Volume 1 Issue 2, you can find out why Polly T. Michaels, DMD chose to work for IHS instead of entering private practice and why she felt the Commissioned Corps officer career path was the best fit for her. Dr. Michaels also describes the exciting and challenging clinical aspects of her career, as well as the lifestyle benefits she enjoys - such as "root digging" and whale watching.

In Volume 1 Issue 3, Tim Lozon, DDS, Deputy Director, Division of Oral Health describes working for IHS and dispels some of the myths and misconceptions he often hears from students during his campus recruitment events.

In Volume 2 Issue 1, Eric Lamont Mack, a 4th year dental student at the University of Texas, Houston, Dental Branch and Kevin Chin, a 4th year dental student at the State University of New York (SUNY), discuss their decisions to be part of IHS Externship program and the unique professional and personal experiences offered by the program.

Volume 2 Issue 2, highlights the clinical and administrative training, and career-advancement opportunities, IHS offers through its Advanced General Practice Residency (AGPR) program. Heshmet Mortazavi, DMD, Angie Roach, DDS, and Kimberly Woods, DMD candidly talk about their experiences and the career benefits the AGPR offers IHS practitioners.

Volume 2 Issue 3, highlights the incredible opportunity IHS and specific individual facilities offer to pay down, or completely pay off your student loans! Dr. Tim Lozon describes the loan repayment programs that are available to those who come to work for IHS, including the national Loan Repayment Program and the Supplemental Loan Repayment Program.

Volume 2 Issue 4, No doubt about it - the best way to learn about the many rewarding opportunities at the IHS Division of Oral Health is an in-person discussion with an IHS recruiter. In Volume 2, Issue 4, learn how to schedule a Lunch & Learn with an IHS Recruiter as well as why it's important to apply early for an IHS Externship.

Volume 3 Issue 2 Need to make a decision on where to begin your professional career? IHS Division of Oral Health offers the opportunity to work with in-need and appreciative patients, a student loan repayment program, modern facilities and more. In Volume 3, Issue 2, four recently-hired dentists recall how they’ve benefited from their decision to join IHS.

August 2005
Volume 3, Issue 3 Throughout the school year, Tim Lozon, DDS, Deputy Director, Division of Oral Health, travels the country meeting with dental students. In Volume 3, Issue 3, Dr. Lozon answers many of the frequently asked questions and offers tips on applying for the IHS Student Loan Repayment Program and student externship opportunities.

Volume 3, Issue 4 The experience gained during an IHS Externship goes beyond just developing clinical skills. In Volume 3, Issue 4, CAPT Jose Rodriguez, DDS, Chief, Service Unit Dental Program at Pine Ridge Indian Hospital and Gary Vitaletti, DMD, MA, Clinical Associate Professor at UMDNJ tell both sides of the story.

Volume 4, Issue 1 How do IHS Dentists measure success? Can you put a value on a fulfilling a mission and purpose? In volume 4, Issue 1, CDR Timothy L. Ricks, DMD MPH, CDR Jim H. Webb, DDS, CAPT Timothy Lozon, DDS and CAPT Linda Jackson, DDS explain why "IHS Dentists Go Beyond the Routine!"

Volume 4, Issue 2 For IHS Dental professionals, public health means doing as much as you can for as many people as you can, one step at a time. In Volume 4, Issue 2, CDR Mary Beth Johnson, DDS, CDR Michael Cadieux, and LT Torrey Darkenwald, RDH discuss the rewards of caring for the needs of American Indian/Alaska Native communities.

In IHS Impressions, Vol. 4, Issue 3, RADM Christopher G. Halliday, DDS, MPH, Chief Dental Officer for USPHS and Director of the Indian Health Service (IHS) Division of Oral Health, discusses the challenges facing public health dentistry today and in the future.

IHS Impressions, Vol. 4, Issue 4 "It's the place to be involved," Dr. Lozon says. "For anything new going on at IHS DOH this is the avenue through which we'll convey it to students." Recognizing the need to reach dental students in new and more convenient ways, IHS Division of Oral Heath launches new communication channels exclusively for dental students.
