Overview
To help U.S. university and colleges stay at the forefront of science education and research, the Office of Nuclear Energy, University Program assists universities in the operation of research reactors and in the performance of other educational activities. Direct support is provided to educational institutions in 30 states and territories.
The program includes the following elements:
- University Nuclear Infrastructure (UNI):
This program brings together several program elements supporting the increasingly vital university nuclear engineeing infrastructure. Program elements include:
- Innovations in Nuclear Infrastructure and Education (INIE)
- Reactor Fuel Assistance
- Reactor Upgrades
- Reactor Sharing
- Nuclear Engineering Education Research (NEER) Grants
- DOE/Industry Matching Grants
- Nuclear Engineering/Health Physics Fellowships and Scholarships to Nuclear Science and Engineering Programs at Universities
- Radiochemistry
- Nuclear Engineering and Science Education Recruitment Program
- Summer Internships at National Laboratories
- International Student Exchange Program (ISEP)
FY 2006 Planned Accomplishments
- Fund the 6 INIE awards.
- Fund upgrades and improvements at approximately 17 research reactors.
- Award approximately 24 fellowships to nuclear engineering M.S. and Ph.D. students.
- Award approximately 76 scholarships to undergraduates at majority and minority institutions pursuing a nuclear engineering degree.
- Award at least 3 Health Physics Fellowships.
- Partner with industry to award 18-20 matching grant awards.
- Fund 3 continuing Radiochemistry grants and award 1 new grant.
