Surficial Sea Floor Composition (
The NGDC "Deck41" database contains surficial sediment descriptions abstracted and coded pre-1975 by the former NODC Marine Geology and Geophysics group (now located at NGDC), primarily from corelogs, laboratory analysis sheets, and unpublished reports contributed by individuals and oceanographic institutions and agencies worldwide. Parameters include collecting source, ship, cruise, sample id, latitude/longitude, date of collection, water depth, sampling device, dominant lithology, secondary lithology, and a brief description of the surficial sediment at the location. In addition to the map service, there is also a text search interface available.

Seafloor Composition

This layer contains a summary of the basic surface lithology from the NGDC Deck41 Surficial Sediment database. Searches return links to export the full data available for selected records from the expanded (complete) Deck41 database. Searches also return links to the NGDC marine geology inventory, where available, to view information about the original report or data file from which the Deck41 descriptions were abstracted. In some cases, the inventory also provides links to associated data types such as grain size, or to an on-line viewable version of the original report. An alternative text search interface is also available.
