The meeting will occur on September 17, 2008 in Logan, WV at the Chief Logan Lodge and is aimed at underground coal mines with less than 50 miners. The goal of this meeting is to supply attendees with the most up-to-date information on a wide variety of safety issues important to small mines operating in the West Virginia and Kentucky region.

The seminar will be held at the Chief Logan Lodge, Hotel and Conference Center in Logan, WV (Phone: 304-855-6100). Special room rates are $70. Penn State University’s Miner Training Program
Professional Development Workshop

in Delaware

September 30th, 2008
Mine safety instructors from Penn State University’s Miner Training Program, safety and health specialists from the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), and industry safety professionals will be conducting a one-day professional development workshop for mine supervisors, competent persons, and safety professionals on September 30th, 2008 in Woodside, DE.

The purpose of the workshop is to enhance safety at your operation through education and training in timely topics such as, recent accidents, understanding the new citation procedures and penalties, violation trends, fall protection, improving the conditions of your operation through inspections, safety excellence, and teambuilding. Tentative program:
  • MSHA update: injuries, regulations, etc.
  • Preparing for inspections
  • Fall protection
  • Safety excellence
  • Teambuilding
The program will be held at the POLYTECH Area School District campus, Adult Education Conference Center (P.O. Box 102, Woodside, DE 19980; ph. 302.697.4545). The Center is located on Rt. 13, south of Dover, DE. The program will begin at 9:00 a.m. and conclude at 4:00 p.m. There is no charge for attending the program, but participants must register with Penn State by September 19th. Seats are limited. Lunch will be provided.

This tuition-free seminar provides opportunities for health and safety trainers to improve their training programs with new ideas and new materials.

Workshops

The workshops cover a wide variety of topics pertinent to both metal/nonmetal and coal mine trainers, such as:

  • Electrical Safety
  • Powered Haulage Safety
  • Interactive Presentation Skills
  • Supervisory Issues
Participants may select from the 60-70 relevant workshops to attend. The small group format encourages interaction between the participants and the work shop leaders.

The 2008 SME/PCMIA Annual Joint Meeting is being held October 30-31 at the Hilton Garden Inn-Southpointe, Canonsburg, Pennsylvania. During this two-day event, there will be four technical sessions covering Mine Rescue and Recovery, New Technology, Carbon Mitigation and Emissions, and Mine Seals.

    Thursday's Keynote speakers include James F. Roberts, CEO, Foundation Coal Corporation and Shane Perry, Mining Engineer, John T. Boyd Company. Robert A. Full, Chief, Allegheny County Department of Emergency Services will be the Friday Keynote, and Dr. George W. Luxbacher, SME President and Vice President-Operations, Glenn Springs Holdings Inc. will provide the luncheon address.

    The Mining Industry Career Fair will take place on Thursday afternoon, October 30. Coal companies, mining consultants, equipment manufacturers, regulatory agencies and others will be in attendance. Students are encouraged to attend and bring along their resumes. There will be summer and permanent employment opportunities available.

Make plans now to attend the third annual Missouri Mine Safety and Health Conference January 15-16, 2009 at Tan-Tar-A Resort in Osage Beach, Missouri.

The conference is a joint effort of Missouri's mining industry including the Missouri Limestone Producer's Association, SEMMSA, the State of Missouri and MSHA. It will feature exciting and informative speakers discussing a variety of topics pertaining to the mining industry.
